Value Chain and Battery Lifecycle Exploitation - VALUABLE
The VALUABLE project is aiming to develop commercially viable metrology and testing processes, along with new supply chain concepts for the recycling, reuse and remanufacturing of automotive lithium-ion batteries.
Batteries from electric vehicle have a life span of around 8 to 10 years following which its too degraded for the high performance requirements of EVs but still have capacity to support second life use cases such as in solar energy storage. By remanufacturing the battery packs and replacing the degraded cells the battery pack can have a longer more valuable second life.
We developed a calculator to help manufacturers figure out the cost and value balance of designing battery packs that are easily remanufacturable/recyclable. By facilitating the conversation now with data we can ensure batteries don't end up in landfill. A follow up app currently in development allows the stakeholders to delve a lot deeper into the process and material data to optimise the design and manufacturing processes.
